In Cherryville North Carolina a fire gutted a home Monday morning killing Mrs James Tate. Her husband was hospitalized with burns suffered while directing their three children to safety. Firemen said a spark from an oil burner in a hall caused the blaze according to preliminary findings.
The processional cross of Westminster, already richly adorned with gold silver and ivory, is being embellished for the Abbey's 900th anniversary. John Wanamaker, descendant of donor Rodman Wanamaker, adds a gift of 72 diamonds to the cross as celebrations begin December 28.
The Chicago livestock market shows hogs at 31.00 a hundredweight for top No 1 and 2 grades, with steady to 0.25 declines at close. Mixed 1-3 grades sell 29.50 to 30.50, heavier 2s and 3s up to 29.50, some No 3s at 25.50 to 23.25, sows to 26.25. Slaughter steers steady with slow demand above 1100 lbs, prime around 27.25 to 27.75 for 950 to 1356 lb classes. Lambs 28.00 to 28.50 for mixed choice and prime, steady to 0.25 higher.
New York markets show mixed stocks with moderate activity. Bonds and cotton quiet, wheat firm with speculative buying, corn little changed, oats easier, soybeans firmer on late rally. Hogs steady to 25 cents lower, top 31 dollars. slaughter steers steady, top 27.75 dollars.
