Scales Pleads Guilty In Patents Theft Case
Darnell Scales a former clerk at the U S Patent and Trademark Office pleaded guilty to theft and sale of patents and government documents. He received three suspended one year terms one year probation and a $1000 fine. Scales earned over 2000 selling copies to the public between 1976 and last May and was linked to a broader FBI led probe touching bribery and theft at the patent office.

Lewis Thomas Powell, 73, died Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Southeastern General Hospital in Lumberton, North Carolina after a year of declining health. A Halifax County native born May 28, 1904, he lived in Red Springs for ten years and retired from Dibrell Tobacco Co. Survived by two daughters Patricia Ann Powell of Hallsboro and Mrs. Emerson C. Howe of East Hartland, two sons Joseph A. Powell of Fayetteville and Lewis T. Powell Jr. of Danville, and five grandchildren. Graveside services at Highland Burial Park today at 2 p.m. conducted by Dr. E. L. Moore. body to lie in Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home. Family at 716 Holbrook Ave.
