Police in Catania captured five men of an underground gang who tunneled 92 yards to reach a bank. Smoke from a sidewalk grill revealed the operation as officers closed in with machine guns. The gang is tied to prior northern Italy robberies, including Asti where about $1 million was taken.
President Carter greeted Secretary of State Vance at Andrews Air Force Base after four days of talks in Peking. Carter said discussions were exploratory and limited in aim with no claim of progress toward normalizing relations with Communist China. Vance and Vice Premier Teng conveyed that the discussions were fruitful from their view.
