Smaller Crop Higher Prices In Rhodesia
Flue-cured tobacco sales in Southern Rhodesia through 19 weeks average 42 cents per pound. Season sales total 161,795,000 pounds for $71,684,000, about $8.50 per hundred above last year's level. The Rhodesian crop is estimated at 260-270 million pounds, down 80 million from 2024. Roy B. Davis Jr., Virginia tobacco marketing agent, notes higher Rhodesian prices may boost U.S. flue-cured competitiveness amid Canada export drops and a rise in U.S. cigarette output. He urges Virginia growers to market a fully ripe, well graded crop, seizing improved market conditions to strengthen the industry.
