Coast Guard probes suspected Mayday hoax on Great Lakes

The 9th District Coast Guard will ask the FCC to investigate possible fraudulent Mayday calls on the Great Lakes. Lt. Wayne Wheeler said a hoax may be to blame for costly, exhausting searches for the missing Kenmar, with Coast Guard boats and planes scouring Lake Michigan and nearby waters for hours without clues.

Virginia Lawyers Back Fortas Nomination

NORFOLK The Virginia Trial Lawyers Association supports President Johnson’s nomination of the Hon. Abe Fortas for the U.S. Supreme Court. Association President Louis B. Fine of Norfolk sent Sen. Eastland a telegram stating the group’s judicial appointments committee enthusiastically backs the nomination and is prepared to testify if necessary.

California Boy Wins Soap Box Derby Title In Photo Finish

A 12 year old California boy won the Soap Box Derby title at Derby Downs Akron Ohio amid rain and a photo finish over a Zanesville Ohio competitor. Robert E Logan of Woodland Hills Calif drove a 975 foot gravity racer in 27.61 seconds as rain delayed the final heats. Third place went to Albert Dremstedt Jr of Evansville Ind with several other top finishers earning college scholarships. Logan earned a $7500 scholarship to the college of his choice and the event drew 60,000 spectators.

113 Year Old Woman Harriett Parker Dies in Stony Point

Harriett Jean Parker, who claimed to be 113, died at home on Rt. 1 in Stony Point. Survived by 10 living of 16 children, 41 grandchildren, 83 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She recalled seeing Union troops near Alexander County in childhood and was said to be born Christmas Day 1851. Funeral by Rev. D W Rutherford at Third Creek Baptist Church near Stony Point.

Death Ends Marriage That Lasts 75 Years

Clemence Julia Scohy died after an illness of three weeks, ending a marriage to retired glassmaker John B. Scohy that lasted over 75 years. The Belgian natives celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary March 7 on a Florida trip. She recalled a daily secret: they never got mad at each other.
