Public hearings on state game law changes draw few area sportsmen
Pittsylvania County may be affected if the proposed changes pass as area sportsmen pay little heed to hearings in Richmond. Game warden Sam V. Pickrel cites modest turnout despite topics like Sunday bow hunting, higher trout fishing fees, veteran license exemptions, and bear season. He notes most bow hunting is elsewhere in the county and stresses fees fund expanded stocking and facilities, with trout funding aiding in-season stockings and larger fish. A Smith Mountain reservoir stocking and a local 4-H meeting attracted attendees but minimal criticism, while the state preserves and ponds offer fishing without harvest. The commission aims to expand outdoor recreation to keep the public engaged.
