McGovern nominates Shriver after Eagleton withdrawal

Viet Cong, Saigon battle near Highway 4 intensify

Government troops retook Nhi Binh east of Cai Lay after four days of Viet Cong occupation. Casualties were about 20 government and 16 Viet Cong killed. Villagers painted over government flags for Communist symbols during the siege. US bombing missions hit enemy concentrations as up to seven North Vietnamese regiments, about 7,000 men, are believed to have infiltrated the region since March 31. Further north, heavy shelling around Quang Tri caused daily casualties among marines, with control centers and the Citadel under pressure. Air strikes targeted routes and depots across North Vietnam, though weather limited raids near Hanoi and Haiphong.

Robert S. Shriver Jr. a key aide to Kennedy and Peace Corps founder

Eunice Kennedy Shriver and her husband live in Chicago Rockville and Cape Cod with five children. Shriver helped run Kennedy's 1960 campaign civil rights division and urged a call to Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr. He led the Peace Corps, then headed the War on Poverty Office, later as ambassador to France where he mingled with workers and fishwives. In a news conference Senator Muskie announced he would not join a McGovern administration citing family strain and emotional exhaustion. He said he may help the campaign if invited but will return to the Senate. His wife Jane and children accompanied him as he spoke at the Cape Arundel Club before heading out for golf.
