Centennial history of the hot dog and sausage vending
The centennial piece traces how German born Union veterans, many untrained in farming, found work as sausage vendors after 1865. It notes sausages sold in German halls and Italian cafes, early Coney Island hot sausage history, the red hot at 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, and Tad Dorgan’s label hot dog. It mentions 1965 as a fitting centennial celebration year.

Tobacco farmers fail to obtain injunction in price support row
Judge George Hart rejected a bid by South Carolina tobacco growers to block Secretary Freeman from cutting the price support differential for tied versus untied tobacco. The case centers on alleged discrimination as Georgia and Florida farmers receive broader supports. The trial judge said no irreparable harm was shown and questioned the fairness of the regulator, while a Justice Department attorney argued the relief sought is beyond the court’s jurisdiction.
