Virginia shows showers and thunderstorms likely Wednesday across the southeast with lingering showers Wednesday night. Highs around the 80s, cooler in the mountains. John Newhart, Chesapeake County sheriff and reelection candidate, was acquitted in Virginia Beach Circuit Court of abducting a 17 year old youth and attempting a sodomy act. The jury deliberated about five hours, with one charge still deadlocked before the verdict.
Senate Democrats unable to overcome a Republican filibuster vote to kill a bill for partial public financing of Senate campaigns. The plan would use taxpayer funds for part of general election costs with federal matching grants and a 25 percent federal grant for major party candidates. The measure failed on a third attempt to invoke cloture with a 42 to 47 vote.
FBI charges Paul Dwain Shepherd and his brother Billy K. Shepherd with conspiring to kidnap J. Willard Marriott or his wife for 500000. Paul Shepherd, a 14 year federal park police veteran, arraigned and held on 50000 bond. FBI affidavit says meetings with an undercover agent documented the plan and surveillance near the Marriott estate.

In Los Angeles AP report, former U2 pilot Francie Powers, 47, possibly steered a news helicopter toward a baseball field to avoid children. Sgt. Dennis Ruegsegger said the craft ran out of fuel and crashed near a ball field while returning from a brush fire. Cameraman George Spears, 43, died. Powers survived.
