Chatham Council Studies Salaries and Budget Plan
The Chatham Town Council approved a $133 835 budget while reviewing the town salary structure. Aiming to raise average employee pay by 15 monthly, council members questioned the 1963 pay range. A June 13 public hearing on the budget was set. The panel also weighed hiring a new consultant, discussed reuse of the old Chatham High School, and formed committees to study a zoning ordinance. Alley access improvements and a street sweeper purchase were debated with cost-benefit considerations. Garden clubs sought matching funds to maintain Hilcrest Gardens Cemetery plots, left to cemetery committee decisions.
