Swicegood Rezoning Granted For Parking Lot And Chapel
The Danville City Council approved a permanent change from R-2 Residential to LC Commercial for the Swicegood Funeral Home property to build a rear chapel and a ground level lot with 100 parking spaces, despite neighborhood opposition favoring a special permit only. Support from the Safety Council and Ballou Center merchants cited reduced parking bottlenecks, while residents feared lowered property values and interference with nearby plans. Planning Commission favored the special permit but Swicegood pursued zoning change citing $100,000 investment and potential re‑build rights after a disaster.

Temple Given Authority To Seek Federal Funds For City Projects
City Manager Temple won eight to one permission to pursue federal funds for urban development and water facilities while returning contracts for council approval. The plan limits grants to targeted programs including urban beautification, planning, water pollution control, water and sewer facilities, and neighborhood facilities with oversight to prevent federal control. Council members voiced concerns about federal influence, praising selective use for Danville’s needs and rejecting blanket authority.
