Soviet Luna 10 launch aims to orbit moon probe
Soviet officials announced Luna 10 was launched to test an automatic space station and place instruments in orbit around the moon. The craft is expected near the moon by Sunday night or Monday, marking a step toward lunar exploration ahead of the U.S. Lunar Orbiter program. The launch follows Luna 9’s soft landing and precedes U.S. attempts to orbit the moon with five spacecraft.
