Nick Maher leaves ease to oversee his 480 acre Dakota County farm north of Emerson. A 19th century Sioux City Journal collection notes local rail, bridge, and tax actions, with references to trials, trips to the Black Hills, and a death of early settler Daniel Don at Dakota City.
At the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America convention in the last month, Very Rev. P. J. O Callaghan quoted Pope Pius X urging Catholics to lead the anti alcohol movement. He pressed Catholics to act to save the race from alcoholism and to make the nation sober through moral and religious effort.
The obituary notes the deceased, born November 11, 1893 near Homer, Nebraska, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harris, who married George Elwell on December 17, 1912. She lived in Nuraska, served as a congressman, and was active in Nebraska politics. She remains laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. the community extends sympathy to her husband and family.
Notice is given that village owned race track property in blocks 225 226 283 234 279 280 in Dakota City will be leased for 1916 to the highest bidder for cash. Village reserves right to use track any time. Sealed bids due March 18 at 8 p.m. Board may reject any bids.
A 1915 Seattle Electric Company notice bans drinking, smoking, and carrying liquor by on duty railroad workers. Superintendent Henderson states safety requires sobriety and has removed several trainmen for violations. May 17 1915 Rule 6 page 6 P T L & P Co. signed official.
Municipal reforms shut all town saloons as of January 1, 1916 by new legislative enactment.
