Sioux City Hears Case for Free Missouri River Bridge

W. F. Gilman of the Commercial club urges Sioux City and Dakota and Woodbury counties to buy or build a bridge across the Missouri. He favors purchasing the Combination bridge to create free passage, arguing it would boost Sioux City’s growth and lower costs for residents and farmers. Mayor Andrews hopes for reasonable tolls or a free bridge without duplicating investment.

Harm Appeals to German Americans in Bloomfield

Bloomfield Neb mayor Wm H Harm spoke for 81 minutes in the county courthouse urging German born Americans to remain loyal to the United States. He recounted his own rise from poverty in Dakota City to mayor, urged repayment of loyalty to the U.S., and warned that Germany would demand postwar payments while delegitimizing German citizens who remain loyal to Germany. The meeting ended with unanimous votes to send a telegram of loyalty to the president.

Olson Family News and Homer Red Cross Sale

Elmer Olson of Alberta Minnesota was called to Hubbard Nebraska for his ill mother Helena Olson and will visit before returning home. Norman Chas Olson and Joe Hurley left Hubbard for Nebraska. A Homer Red Cross street auction raised over 3000 dollars with 1000 attendees, selling horses hogs poultry butter cakes pies and more. Auctioneer A Ira Davis assisted and William P Warner opened with a patriotic speech.

The war department seeks large straw purchases and discourages burning as a year with high demand. City buyers offer nine dollars per ton for baled wheat straw and board corn. US Food Administration controls binder twine to curb distribution and speculation. Jackson seed corn testing hires two men. corn tests cost 75 cents per 100 ears.

M. E. Church Notes and Events

The M E Church notes report Sunday services at 11 a m and 4 p m with cantata practice at 2 30. The Ladies Aid hosted an all day meeting at Mrs Don Forbes home last Friday with Red Cross sewing and many guests. Dr Furman district superintendent visits on the 23rd for a membership meeting and lunch in his honor.
