German immigrant dies after being struck by train near Emerson
A deaf railroad worker was struck by a train along a curve, breaking his back and killing him. His son, nearby in a field, saw the incident and alerted rescuers. The body was buried in Rose Hill cemetery after services at Demme's parlors conducted by Rev. Traubel. Born January 20 1861 in Holstein, Germany, he came to the United States in 1910 and leaves a wife and ten children, three of whom remain in Germany.

Civil Service Announces Hubbard Fourth Class Postmaster Exam
The United States Civil Service Commission will hold a postmaster examination at Sioux City Iowa on August 11 1917. Successful candidates may fill a fourth class postmaster vacancy at Hubbard Nebraska and other offices as openings arise. Candidates must be 21 or age 18 in states where designated. Pay last fiscal year was 541. Applications filed promptly with the Commission in Washington DC or with the local postmaster.

Alfalfa Seed Purity Found Poor in Sample
County Agent reports alfalfa seed sample from a Winnebago area incident shows 81.9 percent pure seed with 8.3 percent foreign matter and 9.8 percent inert material. Dodder and other weed seeds totalling 43,920 per pound were counted, indicating significant weed intrusion and a need for purity testing under the new seed law. Farmers urged to send samples for analysis and to buy only proven seed before fall sowing.

A county agricultural auto tour is set for Friday July 20 hosted by the Dakota County Farmers Association. The itinerary includes surveys of heating lighting water systems septic tanks and farm buildings plus demonstrations on pocket gopher eradication and visits to top Holstein Shorthorn Herford and Poland China herds.
