Labor Commissioner Gaye leads a statewide push to take up seventy four irrigated ditch lands in western Nebraska under the homestead law. Buyers pay $855 per acre for water rights with a twelve year pay schedule. land itself is free. Train excursions from Chicago to Nebraska aim to recruit settlers, with government support on location.

Col Theodore Roosevelt seeks delay until October 1 to testify before the senate committee probing campaign contributions. He questions Archbold’s claim over a $25,000 gift to Senator Penrose and declares Archbold should testify before leaving for Europe. Archbold dismisses the accusations as false and vows to respond.
At the American Bar association opening in Milwaukee the debate over admitting Assistant Attorney General William H. Lewis a Negro looms large. Harvard graduate Lewis has support from Attorney General Wickersham who threatened resignation if denied. Col Alexander Troy warned that admitting Lewis could cost Southern members. The executive committee first admitted Lewis then rescinded, leaving the decision to the full body.

Col. C. Wilson of the United Wireless Company dies at the U S penitentiary where he served a three year term for mail fraud. Poisoning alleged as cause after he collapsed reading in the prison library. He had begun his sentence August 23, 1911. In New York Jack Johnson will not fight Joe Jennette as boxing commission orders and managers withdraw the match.
In Los Angeles on August 28, Judge William Porter denied Clarence S Darrows motion to quash the indictment charging him with the bribery of Robert Main. The decision sets the stage for the ongoing trial proceedings.
