A collage of notices reports visits and personal updates from Sloan Pender and Sioux City areas. Names include Nels Hanson the Nye sisters Jett Cone and many others with travel illness transfers and social events plus military letters from Camp Fremont and front lines.
The Interstate Live Stock Fair plans a September event in Sioux City highlighting education and inspiration in agriculture and livestock raising. Secretary Joe Morton cites world shortages of livestock and horses, urging American vigor and expertise to boost production with modern ideas, judging, lectures, premiums, and a grand animal parade.
Maj William R Ream a surgeon and Dakota County native died when his aircraft fell 150 feet near Effingham Illinois during a cross country flight with a British American squadron. Pilot Lieut Wesley Benner of Mecuchin New Jersey suffered severe injuries. Ream, 42, had recently served in San Diego Mineola and Rockwell Field before joining the Middle States tour. He leaves a widow Harriet Flanders and daughter Mabel 13 with many relatives in Nebraska and Iowa. Funeral will be held in Homer Nebraska with Masonic services in Walthill.
Red Cross notes from Chicago division report ample yarn and large stock of ready to distribute knitted goods including 1.6 million sweaters and 384 thousand wristlets. Between Sept 1 1917 and June 30 1918 the group supplied 5.875 million knitted articles to the military and 670 thousand to France and Italy.
War Industries Board urges chapters secure yarn through Division Bureaus of Supplies. Omaha Red Cross announces extensive exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair with department heads present to answer questions and explain new accounting, packing, and folding methods. Representatives will instruct on knitting socks and garments. women urged to attend and join Red Cross activities.
Rev F J Allcock notes next Sunday's morning service with Rev E M Furman present to lead the postponed quarterly conference after the service. Promises on benevolences should be paid promptly by September 1 as there is only one week before conference. the pastor asks for timely reporting.
Mrs. Bertha Stine of Springfield Nebraska credits Tanlac with curing her yearlong stomach trouble. She describes severe pains back of the neck, heart pressure, fainting spells, and weight loss before finding relief with Tanlac and Tanlac Tablets. She reports a twenty pound gain and renewed appetite, calling Tanlac the best medicine she has heard of. Neiswanger Pharmacy in Dakota City sells Tanlac.
The University of Nebraska recommends silage or chopping badly drought damaged corn. Add ample water to compensate extreme dryness. moisture content varies from about 20–26 percent in drought years to 70–76 percent in green corn. Overwatering is safer than underwatering for preserved feed.
