The Dakota County Teachers Institute will convene in the Public School building at Dakota City Nebraska on Monday August 28 1916 at 9 o clock a m and continue for five days The week is chosen as optimal for institute purposes It avoids conflicts with summer schools professional work and recreation and ensures teachers gain new methods and inspiration for the coming year All teachers with over twenty months experience must attend but may limit to Tuesday or Wednesday if they attended an approved summer school report with times and credits earned to qualify
Prof M C Lefler of the Teachers Training Department will handle intermediate and grammar grades. Miss Carrie A Beck will oversee primary work and some intermediate topics. Mr A H Beckhoff Dakota County Agricultural Agent will speak on Boys and Girls Cub work and the school relation to this program.
All teachers bound for Dakota County schools next year, including those without current schools, are urged to attend the institute to meet professional requirements. The State Department rules apply to all teachers in schools under articles 8 and 6.
Teachers may enroll before the institute opens with a Monday 8 to 9 a m window. The enrollment fee is one dollar payable in a silver dollar. All teachers with county or state certificates must pay the fee, no exemptions. Late payment triggers a request for payment. Teachers select Monday the work best suited to their needs. changes require the superintendent's consent. Instructors will monitor attendance and interest.
County Superintendent announces sale of Reading Circle books for the 1916 17 school year. Rural teachers study Ellwood Sociology and Bachman Principles of Education priced 90 cents each. town teachers Ellwood Sociology 90 cents and The Schools of Tomorrow Dewey 1.00. Institute attendees may buy any Reading Circle book for 50 cents. exams in May and July 1917 with a 70 percent passing grade.
The notice requires school closures during the institute and strict attendance records. Teachers must submit signed attendance at session end. unsigned records are rejected. Note books follow instructor dictation. Transfer of certificates for teachers from other counties. Fee set at $1.50. Report blanks and supplies will be issued with usage instructions.
The notice states individuals must appear in person to receive them and agents cannot canvass teachers. The county superintendent will assist teachers with lodging and meals, and state certificates must be registered prior to teaching. A one dollar fee is charged.
Sergeant Bluffs held its fourteenth annual Old Settlers reunion and picnic with many Dakota County residents attending. Horace Dutton and A. H. Baker spoke of early Woodbury County days, including Dutton’s 1855 Dakota City settlement, Civil War service, and Baker’s arrival via Council Bluffs. They recalled rough conditions, smudging for cattle, arduous river ice, blizzards, and the first schoolhouse construction.
The pastor preaches at 11 a.m. Sunday and Rev C N Martin of University Place speaks at p.m. about the Omaha hospital mission. No collection at this service. benevolence offerings are due Sept 1. Members urged to bring contributions to the pastor. The True Blues plan an engaging winter program with a newly formed glee club.
