Sioux City set to host an eight day fair at Woodland Park from September 17 to 22 with daily harness and running events. Officials, led by Joe Morton, expect record purses peaking above 1916 totals and surpassing 6 000 dollars in prize money across running pacing and trotting divisions.
The husband was 18 and the wife 13 at marriage in Dakota City Neb. They wed by a local justice of the peace. Mr Pack seeks a divorce accusing his wife of associating with other men and leaving him on June 11. Pender Times notes Guy T. Graves Jr. at Culver military school was injured last week diving and recovering. Edna Rasmussen of Mitchell SD visited the Jatters family and returned home Friday. Judge Graves was named by the governor to represent the government before the local board on exemptions.
The Loren Shumway family spent last week at Crystal lake enjoying a outing with Evalyn Burns and Waldo Piper. Waugh Tollinger is visiting Crystal lake for a rare vacation. Absence led to no picture shows this week. E. J. Warner, former town citizen and real estate broker in Anchorage Alaska, died aged about 50.

Mexico visitors E J Way and daughters Mary and Sarah arrive for a several weeks stay with friends and relatives. G A Herrick and son George go to Omaha. George enlists in Company G of the 4th Nebraska infantry and will depart for Deming New Mexico. Linotype operator Ben Beck, a Spanish American War veteran, boasted of his marksmanship and indeed hit the bell at the Big4 Fair Grounds when challenged by Editor Kroesen.
Mrs. W A Morgan visited J W Benstead and P F Ellis homes over the weekend and returned to South Sioux City. Allen Commercials begins new management with Isaac Davidson of Dixon Neb as owner and manager replacing long time operator Miss Margaret Nordyke and sister Mrs C E Taylor of York Neb. News reached Mrs J L McDonald that her 11 year old nephew Seth Hammond drowned near Mt Vernon Wash. Grotheime family moved from Allen last November and the father died by drowning at Crystal Lake nine years ago. Elma Allen of Allen is an aunt of the deceased boy.
In Dakota County the push to prosecute liquor cases stalls due to friction between County Attorney George Leamer and Special State Prosecutor R B Evans. Evans, appointed by Gov Keith Neville, has only led part of one trial and may soon take full charge of enforcing liquor laws in the county. A $50 000 state fund supports the effort.
The Nebraska August crop report from the Bureau of Crop Estimates gives forecasts for corn at 288 million bushels, winter wheat 10.9 million, spring wheat 6.27 million, oats 97.8 million, barley 3.62 million, rye 2.7 million, potatoes 12.59 million, and apples 0.812 million barrels. Yields and year ago figures accompany each item, plus latest price averages for wheat corn oats potatoes hay and eggs.
The Pioneers and Old Settlers Association of Dakota County will hold its 36th reunion and picnic at Clinton Park in Dakota City Nebraska on Thursday August 20 1917. The event lists officers and committees including President Timothy Murphy Vice President John H Ream Secretary Geo Wilkine and many volunteers for grounds publicity music amusements and receptions. The long roster covers marshals registrars membership privileges and numerous speakers and hosts from Dakota County communities.
Mack Leedom writes from Menlo Park California dated July 31 1917 to his father Joe Leedom about heat illness in camp plans for a militia regiment and possible deployment to France. He recalls taking an oath to the flag and notes the death of Howard Rockwell with seven Dakota City boys in his company. He describes mosquito harassment and work preparing a camp for 40000 troops while expressing confidence that Germany will be whipped.
