A local update states that the new guaranty law for bankers does not alter existing conditions or requirements. Officials clarify the enactment is technical in nature and maintains current practice. The wording focuses on insurance of deposits and bank oversight without expanding or restricting prior rules.
W B Caldwell vice president United States National Bank of Omaha states in a letter through Secretary Rouse that the state guaranty law has not harmed general banking and that conditions here are unusually sound. He notes strong supervision, a good banking code, and cordial relations between state and national banks while cautioning the law remains untested and burdensome to sound bankers.
Lincoln sweltered in July with temperatures hitting 104 degrees for the first time this year. The mercury topped the century mark four times, and the monthly average ran 2.6 degrees above normal.

Schreiter joined by Burns evidence faces charges of conspiring to obtain money for officials in granting Wabash railroad street property. Rumors say the sixteen additional aldermen may waive police court examination and seek swift disposition.
President Taft vetoed a second time within a year a bill to revise the Payne Aldrich wood tariff schedule. He argued that the proposed ad valorem duties of 29 percent on raw wool and 4 percent on cloths fall short of protecting U S wool growers and manufacturers and urged Congress to pass a substantially reduced duties measure without harming domestic industry. He pledged to support protection adequate to offset production costs abroad.
Funeral services for Gen. Cincinnatus Leconte, president of Hayti, who died in the explosion of the national palace on Thursday, were held in Port au Prince with military honors. Flags stood at half mast as the city observed the somber ceremony.

Bochum Germany Aug 10 A mining disaster at the Lorraine pit near Gerthe imperiled 650 men as the day shift entered. Many were rescued but more than 103 killed and many injured. The explosion occurred as workers spread across levels of the mine.

Cavalry dismounted after forming a line, engaged for an hour, helped cover the retreat of infantry, crossed swampy terrain, and guarded the rear near Ripley while aiding Fourth Iowa Cavalry.
In a fierce engagement the Third Iowa Cavalry under Colonel John W. Noble held a fighting line against pressing enemy forces near Ripley. Despite heavy fire and flank threats, Noble deployed platoons along the road, received relief from a cavalry and infantry force, and eventually was relieved by the Fourth Iowa cavalry. The regiment suffered 62 killed wounded or captured.
