A roundup from Sioux City to Ponca and Wakefield notes visitors and travel, including F W Swingle and Mrs Swingle returning from Wenatchee, Anna and Emo Austin teaching at Coburn Junction, Burt Kroesen hosting Mrs Day, and Col E F Rasmussen on a Dakota county trip. Obituaries and local incidents touch West Point, Crystal Lake camping, a death in Anchorage, and a rusty nail injury in Homer.
City resident will stay with uncles F. H. and BE. J. Way in their Iowa home. Oscar Sayer and Mrs. Green returned from Eagle Grove to report their brother Frank much improved but still bedridden in the hospital.
Sunday visitors include D G Evans and family in South Sioux City. Dakota City’s Harry H Adair and Jackson’s L Kearney spent Saturday in town. A spark from a pass ignited a barley field near August Voss burning 31 shocks before extinguished. Theo Peters shipped twenty one white face yearlings last week and topped the day at 13.26 per head, a record high. the yearlings averaged 42 pounds and yielded 2800 dollars net.
Local notices report Louis Larsen purchasing an Overland in Hubbard, Misses Elsie Harrigfeld and Helen Harrigfeld traveling to Ashton Idaho, and Floy Poole with Nell Kerwin taking teachers exams in Dakota City. Other items note Mrs. Levi McEntaffer and Mrs. J A Treland visiting Brookings South Dakota, Emmerson Boy Scouts planning camp near Homer, and Alice Campbell visiting her mother in Homer Nebraska. A girl burned July 3 at Summit Avenue seeks grafting surgery at St. Vincent's. A Jackson Nebraska car accident injures a boy on Washington Avenue. Lyons editor M M Warner learns his brother E J Warner died in Anchorage Alaska July 26. He leaves a widow and three children. E J was born in Dakota City and educated locally.
The Peterson Concert Trio performs an evening of songs stories and music including classics and comic impersonations with violin numbers under the True Blues banner. Tickets priced 25c and 5c.
A Casper Moose lodge party honored Tom Nichols and Carney Peter Son before their deployment with the Wyoming Infantry. The event included a lunch, wrestling and sparring bouts, music by Iris orchestra, and a $60 contribution to the mess fund.
Mr and Mrs E L Carstensen depart for Homer Nebraska to visit Mrs Carstensen s brother E F Redden and family. Nebraska railway commission orders Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha trains 11 and 12 to stop at South Sioux City and Dakota City within a week or ten days ending an eight month battle led by Ward Evans South Sioux City city attorney to resume the old schedules Train service to western Nebraska towns Dakota County had been halted since November 18 1916.

Governor Keith Neville moved to curb illegal liquor traffic in Dakota County enlisting special agents. A string of arrests followed with many pled guilty and fined 100 dollars plus costs under the new prohibitory law. The state plans to use R. E. Evans as special prosecutor amid tensions with County Attorney Leamer.
Lincoln State Journal reports Governor Neville appointed Judge R. E. Evans of Dakota City as special prosecutor to curb bootlegging in Dakota County. County Attorney George W. Leamer will be relieved of major prosecutorial duties. Evans agreed to dedicate substantial time, amid alleged inflow of liquor from Dakota and Iowa. A Crystal Lake discovery included 1680 quarts of beer and a barrel of whisky. An influential local club called the I Don't Know club operates a lakefront resort drawing Sioux City visitors.
Lincoln report says County Attorney George W. Leamer lacks enthusiasm for enforcing the prohibitory law. Governor Neville will appoint a state prosecutor to handle Crystal Lake liquor cases in Dakota county. A state agent reports seizing 1680 bottles of beer and one barrel of whisky from Crystal Lake, with no ownership claims filed.
The Department H under Mrs BE Brown, Central City, expects more space for the Big Domestic Products display as Nebraska housewives show skill in canning and preserving. Two premiums offer $6 first and $4 second for best canned fruits and vegetables. Event dates: September 3 to 7.
