The emperor of Japan Mutsuhito died of acute nephritis in Tokyo. Crown Prince Yoshihito ascends the throne as crowds gather outside the palace. President Taft telegrams condolences and wishes for a long prosperous reign.
Clarence Darrow testified that he did not give a $1,000 check to Bert Franklin on October 6 and that checks he gave were for legitimate business. Juror L A Leavitt was discharged and thirteenth juror A M Blakesley filled the vacancy, a first in U S trial history.
Justice Keogh ruled Friday that Harry K. Thawn remains insane and a risk to public safety, denying a habeas corpus plea and ordering return to the Matteawan asylum for the insane where he was confined.
Secretary MacVeagh received Joseph O. Thompson's formal refusal to resign from his post as collector of Internal Revenue for Alabama and Mississippi. Thompson was asked to resign by Mr. MacVeagh.
Chicago July 27 Albert J Beveridge former Indiana senator has left the Republican party and will serve as temporary chairman of the national Progressive party convention in Chicago.
Claude Allen, an outlaw from Hilleville, was convicted in Wytheville Virginia on a Saturday trial of murder in the first degree for killing Commonwealth Attorney William M. Foster.
Detroit July 30 eight aldermen charged with taking money for votes in a street closing case faced reelection petitions. A lock expert forced open the Council Committee Clerk Ed ward Schreiter Jr office safe, papers were taken, and bail set at 5000 for each alderman including Louis Tossy Louis Broo Andrew Walsh David Rosenthal Martin Ontrowski Alois Delmel Joseph Thelsen and Frank Mason. Thomas Gilman and B R Schreiter were held for arraignment with bonds of 5000 while Schreiter denied bond.
Cloud bursts across Fayette county sixty miles south of Pittsburg claim at least nineteen lives. In Evans Station at the Polecat mine three men drown when a roof collapses and floodwaters fill Lemont No 2 mine. A boy drowns in a flooded Dunbar street. President Taft enters Pauline Wayne the prize cow in the Pennsylvania Cattle Show in Devon on September 19.
Iowa Democrats endorsed by referendum the platform adopted at the state convention. The body also nominated Maurice O Connor of Fort Dodge and John B Craig of Lee County for the supreme court. The platform supports initiative and referendum, direct primary nominations, presidential primary, direct election of party committeemen, government ownership of telegraphs and telephones, railroad valuation, employers liability act, and woman suffrage.
The Taft faction released a long statement defending the nomination at Chicago. It argues tribunals ruled correctly and accuses Roosevelt supporters of numerous contested cases, asserting Taft backers can stand on the record.

Four young people drowned in the Kankakee River four miles below the city on Sunday. Two bodies have been recovered and searchers drag the river for the remaining two.
Washington July 29 The beef trust is deemed no longer in existence by the Department of Justice Attorney General Wickersham accepted a plan for voluntary dissolution of the National Packing Company owned by Morris Swift and Armour. He will not pursue civil dissolution and ensured competition will be revived and further prosecutions possible if needed. the result follows a 1906 Supreme Court injunction.
Minority report from Stanley steel investigation cites federal incorporation of firms with capital over sixty million as a remedy. Republicans Gardner and Danforth sign the report while Sterling and Young abstain from endorsing federal price regulation, though agree on federal incorporation.
Hardy H. Whitlock former Vermilion county treasurer pleaded guilty in Danville Illinois and faced a fine of 76 000 by Judge Kimbrough after admitting diverting public funds to private use.

Charles Allen Whitney, who was sentenced to the penitentiary for bigamy in Plattsmouth and other places, received a gubernatorial pardon on the judge’s recommendation. Whitney admitted his wife and two children and had married Mrs. Backus in Nebraska City after fleeing.
The state railway commission authorizes a 14 cent rate on canned goods from Kearney to Lincoln and Omaha with a minimum weight of 80,000 pounds. The rate is set to benefit a new canning factory soon to begin operations.

The state board of assessment plans to review land values in ninety two counties after rail commission complaints. Assessors from Nemaha and Seward counties cite under valued lands and seek higher valuations or lower state levies. If values rise, county levies may drop, potentially keeping taxes near last year.
The Coleman Aviation association of Omaha filed articles of incorporation with the secretary of state. Incorporators are Rupert F Coleman and Peter Lock. Paid in capital stock is $5000. The object is to buy flying craft and give exhibitions.
Adjutant General Phelps returned from Grand Island after a conference with local residents on hosting the Second Nebraska guard encampment. Colonel Paul of the Second inspected two miles northwest of the city on a horse ranch with an auto speed track. The Platte valley site offers water and a field for maneuvers. encampment set for August 23 with Lincoln hospital corps to participate.
The Lincoln district court faces a quiet summer as judges are on vacation and many lawyers are out of the city. Only occasional filings reach the clerk, with court to reconvene around early October.
The railway commission ordered the Burlington road to enlarge its Crawford station and rework grounds and tracks to provide safe approaches for travelers. Commissioner H J Winnett prepared the commission’s decision, and the railroad must file plans and finish improvements by June 1 1913.

In Lincoln July 30 Nebraskas Republicans split into two district conventions with opposing declarations of principles and two state central committees. Progressives led by Gov Aldrich won control after the executive committee seated Roosevelt faction delegates, Taft supporters walked out amid protest, and the seatings sparked a heated clash in the hall.
In Grand Island Nebraska July 30 the W J Bryan faction won the state convention electing W H Thompson over incumbent John Byrne by 478 to 428 votes. Roll call changes widened Thompson's margin as anti Bryan leaders accepted defeat and pledged loyalty to the ticket.
The populist state convention in Aurora Nebraska adjourned after about two hours. It approved a slate supporting the Democratic national ticket and portions of the state Democratic ticket and passed a resolution commending W. J. Bryan for his Baltimore convention actions. The state central committee was reorganized with fifteen members. Resolutions urged reforms including direct presidential election and abolishing the electoral college.
About fifty Nebraska Prohibitionists met in Lincoln to choose a state committee, arrange ballot representation for November, and adopt a platform aligned with the national convention. Aaron Watkins, candidate for vice president, led the night speaking session.
