Shreveport Times notes one of the era's largest snakes was killed in Louisiana. Mr Smith of Quaps Bayou informed yesterday that he and his son William, aged about, witnessed the event and described the encounter.
In Louisiana on an afternoon hunt Mr. Smith and his son found a yearling calf lifted by a huge snake coiled around a tree limb near a bank. The reptile struck at the body twice and was driven off by multiple gun volleys. They dispatched the snake, measuring 31 feet, with a 42 inch thick midsection and a purple flank pattern. The creature is believed to be a boa-constrictor type and will be sent to Shreveport for exhibition.
Mr Randall declared as Speaker that extravagance by the people would be dangerous and urged restraint. His keynote addressed the need for prudent finance and discipline within the party to avoid reckless spending.
