The Old Copper Cent Not Legal Tender in Debts
The U S treasurer says the ante bellum old copper one cent is not legal tender for any amount. Postmasters are not required to accept it for postal dues. Copper cents were discontinued in 1957 and can be redeemed at face value only when presented in large sums, but remain non tender in debts. The total issued up to now totals 156,288,744 cents, worth $1,562,877.44.
