Hungarian Freedom Fighter Held in Hungary Under Custody
Sandor Ronyai, a Hayward, California resident and naturalized U.S. citizen since 1963, was arrested Aug. 2 at his mother’s Balaton shore home and placed in investigative custody by the Hungarian government. A former Hungarian Air Force member and United Airlines machinist, he left Hungary for the United States in late 1958 or early 1959 and has been detained during a disputed vacation visit with his wife and four daughters. charges were not yet filed, and the status of his family remains unclear.

Cease-fire deteriorates as Israel attacks Egypt near Suez
Israeli warplanes attacked Egyptian ground positions east of the Suez Canal, the first breach since the cease-fire took effect a year ago. Egyptian spokesmen denied firing on the attackers, while Egypt said an Israeli plane was shot down earlier, killing seven of eight crew. The exchanges marked a sharp cease-fire deterioration with both sides claiming retaliation and minimal damage reported by Egypt.

California population to rise to 82.5 million by 2000
California demographers from the Department of Finance forecast the state’s population will reach 82.5 million by 2000 with migration driving growth. They project Orange, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties will double, while Ventura County could triple to about 1.24 million in the next 29 years. The current population is about 22.0 million. Net migration is the key assumption, expected to remain lower than the peak 1961 64 period.

Livermore Delays Bicycle Registration Over Wage Freeze
