Phone Workers Across Nation Out On Strike
Western Electric equipment installers in 44 states joined a nationwide strike called by the Communications Workers of America. Long distance operators refused to pass picket lines at major centers, while supervisory staff took over long distance lines. By midmorning most long distance service was curtailed, some areas limited to emergency calls, yet local service remained nearly normal. The union sought higher pay and better benefits, negotiations failing three hours before the deadline. About 1.356 million employees were expected to observe the picket lines.

Boy Heroically Rescues Child From Lion Attack
Albert Lee II of Duarte was saved after a mountain lion mauled him in Oxnard vicinity. Albert Zee and Herman Evans wrestled the 175-pound animal away while Edward Emrock fired, striking the lion between the eyes. the boy suffered multiple head wounds and was taken to St John's Hospital for stitches. The lion escaped from Jungleland, with trainer Koonth describing the animal as the best pet they ever had.

Area road crashes kill two and injure fifteen
Two Oakland women died and 15 people were injured in seven area crashes from Saturday night into yesterday.
