A nitrous oxide tanker overturned on U S 9 near Madera causing no injuries but one officer was exposed, treated, then released. The driver Hersard Wilson of Oakland reported a strong gas odor. Residents evacuated briefly until gas deemed non poisonous and non explosive. The trailer separated from its tractor in the northbound lane and spread into the southbound lane.
Castro Valley Bay O Vista Improvement Association announces its annual dinner dance Moonlight and Roses set for Saturday October 4 at Willow Park Golf and Country Club. Formal dinner at 6 pm with cocktails at 7 pm and dancing to the Lou Earl Orchestra from 8 pm to 1 am. Tickets available via Barros 452-0305 or Vivian Claas 397-0001.
Laszlo Varea conductor of the San Leandro Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions for the group on Wednesday September 17. Amateur and professional musicians may be heard at the school. Interested players should contact Bryant Figeroid at 4834700 to arrange audition time.
Mrs. Diane Pike of San Jose says her late husband Ames A Pike will continue to communicate with her since they are not separated by death. She spoke at St. Francis Episcopal Church after arriving home from Israel where Pike was buried. The bishop died last weekend in the Judean Desert while the couple, researching a book on the Use of Jesus, became stranded and lost their way. Her body was recovered after a long search.
California Attorney General Thomas Lynch told the State Bar convention that marijuana deliveries from Mexico are pushing users toward narcotics and hard drugs. He acknowledged his views clash with physicians claims that marijuana use does not lead to heroin. The remarks drew mixed reactions amid calls to ease penalties for first-time marijuana offenders.
Santa Cruz a 23 year old San Jose State College student Seth M Brody was booked on murder charges after a fatal collision described by Highway Patrolmen as sparked by his rage at seeing his girlfriend with another man Witnesses said Brody forced a pickup truck off a road near Seous Valley at about 43 miles per hour the truck overturned injuring Ronald J Bermudes 22 of Campbell while Brody's girlfriend Caral Buizback 23 of Santa Cruz sustained injuries He reportedly told officers he did not want to kill anyone and asked if he had ever been in love while inquiring about Buizback's condition
Sierra Club asked Secretary of the Interior to explain why offshore drilling resumed in the Santa Barbara Channel after a spill that fouled beaches and threatened wildlife. Union Oil and others reportedly continued leakage as a Nixon adviser linked a proposed report to stop further spills with drying the oil field.
President Reagan and wife Nancy arrived for the dedication of the Filipino Cultural Center in Manila amid protests. Dozens of anti Reagan signs and chants filled the crowd as students jeered the visit, criticizing the center cost while Reagan aide quipped humorously.
In San Francisco the Bay Area Transit District faced one suit from Orpheum Theater owners seeking 2.2 million over construction noise and vibrations on Market Street. Oakland, Berkeley, and Lafayette governments sued to reinstate rental facilities plans at 14 stations. District directors later agreed to add elevators to 48 stations while critics accused high costs and engineering consultant influence.
More than 2,000 inmates at Folsom Prison began a work strike, halting the tomato canning plant and auto license divisions. Warden’s aide George Haynie said the action was orderly and inmates were sent back to cells for the day. The protest, linked to indeterminate sentencing policy, included pickets led by inmate wife Mrs Martin Souza outside the prison and at the California Adult Authority offices in Sacramento.
