Hayward Unified Teachers Association rejected the district's latest proposal in a 482-65 vote while classes open as scheduled. A membership meeting on Sept. 10 may ratify an agreement or authorize action that day. Fact finding was ordered as negotiations stalled after long talks and a tentative agreement on 21 issues.
President Guillermo Rodriguez Lara declared a curfew and ordered arrests of coalition leaders of the Givie Junta after a 12 hour uprising. At least 17 people were killed and more than 80 injured as rebels tried to seize the presidential palace and were repelled by loyal forces.
Castro Valley 325 teachers overwhelmingly rejected the school board offer and will wait for a new proposal before a possible vote on Sept. 11. No strike vote was taken yet. Education leaders say non monetary items are settled, but salary and fringe benefits remain unresolved. State funds totaling about 263000 provided by SB 220 are to be allocated, with portions for teachers and staff variable.
San Francisco Berkeley and Oakland teachers face strike threats after three days of failed talks over pay and working conditions. CEC cites 12.1 percent cost living increase demand. Berkeley and Oakland unions report cuts and unsettled concessions. Prospective strike vote planned in Oakland.
Fred Harris former US senator from Oklahoma wrapped up a five week campaign tour ending with a Labor Day rally at the Alameda County Fairgrounds hosted by the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council. Harris urged voters to support his presidential bid citing principles and change while Gov. Edmund Brown Jr. canceled a planned appearance.

Flora Stewart and her palomino Sonny completed a 62 mile two day trek through Death Valley enduring 128 degree heat and fierce winds. They started Sunday at Hell's Gate and finished Monday at Furnace Creek with a vehicle escort. Stewart intends a 13,000 mile solo trek through all 50 states using the horse.
