Hayward Youth Wounded in Korean War Passages

A 22 year old Hayward resident Pfc Nester A Quintero is listed as wounded in action in Korea by the Department of Defense. He is the son of Mrs Georginia Quintero of Silva Avenue Hayward. A letter to his mother says he is in a base hospital with arm wounds and is recovering. Quintero, a three year veteran, is a native of Puerto Rico.

Community Council Meeting Tonight at Hayward High

The Community Advisory Council of the Hayward union high school district will meet at 8 p.m. in the high school board room. The discussion will cover the family relations course and methods for selecting successors and organizing committees. Parents and others interested in the high school's role in the community are welcome.

City water famine drives Russell residents to nature cure

Russell residents facing scarce municipal supply turn to private wells as relief efforts stall. Lucille Carlis has drilled 60 feet at a cost of 300 dollars after four years without adequate water. Russell City Carlson Denies Statement on Russell City Housing

County Building Officer Marcus Carlson challenged Ruth Manwarren's claim that residents were blocked from finishing work after new building restrictions. He said homes under construction when the code was adopted could be completed and noted permits for repairs and additions continue. He urged improvements to make homes livable, with exemptions for repairs up to 25 percent of property value and larger work only if standards are met. Continued on page 2.

Subdividers Win Battle With Guard and City over Project

Alameda county planning commission approved San Lorenzo Homes plan for 86 houses on a 15 acre parcel between Beckman road and Hayward airport. The vote followed a prior two to two deadlock and opposing groups were absent at the Tuesday session. Local residents and San Lorenzo Village Homes association voiced objections, while the California National Guard and City of Hayward objected for airport runway extension needs.

Ashland Fire Destroys Car, Minor Damages Reported

Ashland fire department extinguished a blaze in the car of C. Weiser at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday near 17120 East 14th street. The fire caused by a short in the ignition wires resulted in only minor damages. President Truman instituted tight security safeguards against subversive activity in all American ports and territorial waters. The State Board of Equalization reported that collections of sales taxes rose to a record $331,289,366 in the past fiscal year. A letter from Los Angeles addressed to the Department that catches crooks and liars was delivered to the attorney general's office.

Hospital Area Zoning Given First Hearing

Recommendations for the zoning surrounding Eden Township hospital in Castro Valley were presented to the Alameda county planning commission. The Valley planning advisory group led by Rex Tussing outlined deviations from staff proposals as the first of two hearings on the project.

Allied forces pressed toward Pyongyang as a Republican column breached toward the capital. U.S. 8th Army reported key divisions advancing eight to seven miles from Pyongyang while Seoul radio claimed Koreans had captured the airport and crossed the Taedong River. Dispatches warned a short stand by Communist forces may follow, with fighters moving into Pyongyang’s suburbs amid scattered resistance and shifting lines.
