Oroville Dam Quality Control

The California Department of Water Resources runs a around the clock materials lab to test dirt and rock fill for the Oroville earth filled dam. Tests occur daily across three zones to ensure substandard material is removed and the center fill remains impervious to prevent settling. The dam will span 6,800 feet with a base nearly a mile thick and rise 747 feet above the river bed, containing 165 million tons of fill once completed.

Concord Murder Sailor To Stand Trial

A 23 year old Navy sailor from Deer River Minnesota is bound over for trial in the murder of Judy Barnes Mt Diablo High School sophomore. A tape sounding like the defendant admitting the killing was played during the preliminary hearing. The case stems from the Sept 22 death found near Concord city plaza. The Superior Court arraignment is set for Oct 20. Police and investigators testified about the events and the victim was not sexually assaulted.

Council Honors Cal State Prof

Pr Ruth K Carlson associate professor of education Cal State College at Hayward named chairman of the National Council of Teachers of English Committee on Creativity and Children's Writing. The committee will prepare a bulletin on creative thinking and children writing, per NCTE executive secretary James R Squire.
