A half butchered deer was found in Memorial Park early yesterday. Police surmised it was chased and shot, then butchered by unnamed offenders. Frank Hall, park keeper, reported the deer present Saturday morning. The case went to Game Warden Ark Phillips for complete investigation.
Volunteers will ring doorbells in nine East Bay communities to support 72 health welfare and youth services under the Federated Community Chest appeal. The Red Feather goal 648 funds child care counseling hospital and nursing care and services for away from home service members. Mrs. A M Springer announced volunteers are needed to begin canvassing in Albany Berkeley Emeryville Kensington Oakland Piedmont San Leandro and San Lorenzo.
Hayward residents urged to pray for cancer stricken Jack Couch 24 and his wife Tune 34 as both seek treatment. Jack faces a new cancer fighting drug at University of California Hospital San Francisco with doctors hopeful to halt spread within four days. Tune also receives cancer treatment at Gil, and the couple have two children. Grounded in a small town context, the plea emphasizes faith and family during a difficult medical ordeal.
The U S Supreme Court refused to reconsider a May ruling shielding a state legislative committee from damage suits while performing its duties. At Hamilton Air Force Base California an F-3L Mustang crashed at the south end of the runway during landing. Lt. James J Ward from San Lorenzo escaped unharmed after the right landing gear jammed. Ward was returning from a Hayward combat mission when the gear failed and he diverted to Marin County base for a safer runway.
Cundiff, Charles D. Gumdiff, 32, faces sentencing Thursday after a Superior Court jury found him guilty of second degree murder in the July killing of his wife on a Los Molinos street. The jurors reached the verdict after about 13 hours of deliberation. Prosecutors sought first degree murder, but the panel rejected that claim.

Newark report: Camp Stoneman soldier John J. A three alarm blaze at Mulford Gardens Saturday night razed a barn at West 129th Avenue, causing about 10 000 dollars in damages. Fire crews from Mulford Gardens San Leandro and the Oakland Naval Air Station battled the flames but could not save the barn. The structure owned by George B Mendoza at 1451 West 132nd Avenue housed hay a tractor and other equipment.
UN forces blasted a 70 mile front as Chinese troops rushed to reinforce North Korean units. American divisions reported heavy fighting with Reds on Heartbreak Ridge and Punchbowl Valley while U S and Korean forces captured key ridges and hills. An army spokesman said CN forces suffered heavy casualties and continued to resist despite losses.
