Nixon defends Agnew as probes continue

President Nixon said he never urged Vice President Spiro Agnew to resign while stressing serious charges. He voiced confidence in Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Assistant Atty. Gen. Henry Petersen handling, and condemned leaks surrounding the Agnew investigation. He said Agnew’s stance on not resigning if indicted was proper.

Elks vote to drop white only clause in constitution

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks voted 440 to 1 to remove the white only membership restriction. Effective immediately nonwhites are eligible for membership in its 2,182 lodges across the United States territories. Grand exalted ruler Robert A. Yothers reported 1,184,675 votes in favor to 309,276 against.

Leandro Elks vote draws fire over whites-only policy

Davis Street Child Care Center in San Leandro returned a 24 donation from the local Elks chapter after director Homer Richardson rejected the gift due to the unit's whites-only membership policy. James Herlihy had helped raise the funds, used to buy two tricycles, while Herlihy personally gave 100 dollars. The center serves 20 children, seven Black, with Aubrey Franklin noted as the first Black student connected to Herlihy. The action awaits ratification by North American Elks clubs.

San Leandro Sets Annexation Hearing for Washington Manor

San Leandro trustees scheduled an Oct 24 hearing at 7 30 p m in Bancroft Junior High to hear testimony on moving six Washington Manor schools from San Lorenzo to San Leandro.
