Evacuation Under Way as Sacramento Flood Surges

About 900 residents from a Sacramento suburb were evacuated while 6,000 more were warned as the American River rose five feet past flood stage. Governor Warren declared a state of emergency to mobilize state aid and National Guard units to assist local authorities in shielding life and property.

15 Injured In Crashes In Alameda County

A day marked by multiple crashes left 15 people injured across Southern Alameda County. Three year old Thomas Valensia, in a burning car, has a slim chance of recovery while Virginia Valensia is also in serious condition. Other victims include Miguel Rodrigues 27 Tony Ochez 41 Linda Valensia 27 and her children Ramona 8 Nancy 2, along with Raymond Carey 49 and two Red Bluff youths. The crashes occurred on Highway 50 near Pergola Hill and near Pleasanton, with cars and a truck involved and firefighters pulling victims from flames.

Ashland Civil Defense Council Formed After Meeting

Ashland area civil defense council is being formed after a meeting of 18 local organizations. Jay Chinn of San Leandro was named acting chairman to lead the effort, with R W Van Nortwick as assistant. Sheriff Gleason and Detective Petersen offered support and urged a home rule, bottom up structure spanning San Leandro to Hayward within the Ashland county fire protection district.

Fire causes $1500 damage to Fairview home

Fire caused $1500 damage to the home of Ray D. Brown at 23505 Maud Avenue last night when a floor furnace overheated. Neighbors Bobby and Raymond Alveraz reported smoke. the Brown family was away. Fourteen Fairview firefighters were joined by Hayward units to secure the scene.

Flood floods Reno as Truckee swamps downtown casinos

About 6,000 residents gathered as the Truckee River surged through downtown Reno. Water rose to two feet outside, flooding the Mapes lobby and Riverside area while gamblers kept drinking and slot machines whirred. Cars and pedestrians used boats to reach casinos on higher ground as bridges flooded and the city split. Local theaters post office and banks flooded, with sandbag crews and kerosene lanterns aiding operations.

Two Parking Lots Obtained For Christmas

Hayward city council moved to provide two off street parking lots in downtown for Christmas shoppers. It extended one hour and two hour limits into fringe areas and added three police to enforce limits.

Resistance In Korea Disappears In Wake Of US Surge

Tokyo report notes Communist resistance on Korea's northeast front virtually collapsed as the U S 7th Division pushed to the Manchurian border. South Korean Capital Division breached defenses near Changjin, reaching 15 miles from the city and 67 miles from the Russian border. Center peninsula forces pulled back, while reinforcements crossed the Yalu ridgeheads. The 65th Puerto Rican regiment of the 3rd Division held a town 35 miles west of Hamhung after repelling a Red counterattack. North of them, the South Korean 3rd Division moved north and west from Hukuri.

Thanksgiving Service Set by Hayward Area Ministers

The Union Thanksgiving service will be held tomorrow at 7 30 p m at Eden Congregational church Birch and Bridge streets with Rev Harold Reeves of the Christian church delivering A Christian Expression of Gratitude Music by the Chancel Choir led by Ellerth Larson. Rev Paul Rhodes of First Presbyterian and Rev Richard Norberg of the Congregational church share leadership and the Thanksgiving Offering to the Salvation Army supports local relief work. This marks the fifth annual service sponsored by the ministerial association.

Nine-Day Storm Nears End in California

The Weather Bureau says the nine day storm will be over tomorrow with a band of rain lingering in the central portion of the state today. Heavy rain may hit foothills and Sierras east of Fresno and Merced but not enough to worsen floods. Rain should be light from now on and a high pressure system will bring clearing skies. Total Sierra rainfall exceeded 36 inches during the storm.

Rainstorms May Prove Farm Boon Despite Flood Losses

Officials say recent rainstorms will eventually benefit farmers in the Central Valley by replenishing land and underground reservoirs and safeguarding irrigation water. They note the unfinished Pine Flat dam on the Kings river, authorized a decade ago, worsened flood damage and could have prevented losses and stored water for next summer.

Woman Injured in Shopping Fall at Fairway Store

Mrs Alta Fowler 58 fell while shopping at the Fairway grocery in San Lorenzo about 11 am. She suffered a broken nose and broken right leg, rushed to Fairmont hospital, then transferred to Hayward hospital for further treatment. Store manager Henry Gonzalves said no apparent cause for the fall.

Purple Heart Vets Meet Tonight

Veterans who have received the Purple Heart are invited to an 8 o clock meeting of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 59 at the Veterans Memorial building. Commander Carl Slattengren says combat wounded veterans should unite to discuss and assist those visiting hospitals.
