Union City budgets to cut federal aid in 76-77 plan

Union City aims to hold the 976-77 budget at the current tax rate of 1.67 per 100 while reducing federal funding for operations. The 6.6 million proposal adds about 300 thousand from last year, with 2.27 cents earmarked for bus operations. Valuation increases are expected to lift homeowner tax bills, and CETA funding may be phased out, prompting city-funded positions and staffing changes if federal support ends.

Newark budget aims for belt-tightening without tax hike

City Manager Richard Turnlund unveiled a 95.0 million 1976 77 budget with no municipal tax increase, relying on a 10 percent rise in assessed value to cover higher operation costs. Savings from vacancy cuts and reduced departmental spending are largely offset by increases in insurance street fighting and amortization costs. If council approves, the public may not notice reductions in service.
