In Auburn area, the bodies of Robert Baker and Margaret Baker were found among wreckage of Baker’s light plane about 20 miles northeast of Auburn in the north fork of the American River. Baker had been missing since Wednesday night after departing San Francisco. Surviving are a daughter and two sons. The Bakers operated a furniture and grocery business in San Francisco. The wreckage was spotted by a search plane from Hamilton Air Force Base.
Betsy the hippo and about 50 smaller animals become central in a custody dispute in San Benito Texas. The case pits a Veterans of Foreign Wars post and a zoo curator against others over control of Betsy who traveled from Brooklyn to Harlingen. Franz Jonas, a Socialist with a background as a printer and union apprentice, won Austria’s presidential election with broad support across Vienna and the industrial provinces. The State Department hires 25 Seabees 4 construction specialists and 30 Marines to oversee 14 embassy construction jobs next year.
