Berkeley reporters note a 5.3 magnitude quake recorded by UC seismograph station located about 3,600 miles southeast of Berkeley and 100 to 200 miles below the surface near the Colombian coast.
David Safina, 30, reported two young men robbed his Fresno jewelry shop this week end. One wore a pistol, forced him behind the counter, bound his hands and feet with tape, and gagged him. They took $100 from his wallet, $300 from a safe, and $15 from the cash register.
The U S Navy confirms nuclear submarines at Holy Loch Scotland are being fitted with Poseidon missiles. The British government extends base use for submarines carrying Poseidon missiles. Cmdr Mark W Byrd says the base is now used for this purpose amid public fear of proximity to nuclear weapons and potential war targets, though protests have waned.
Marin Associates plans to test the legality of the federal excise tax on telephone bills in court. Organizer Alan Barnett says over 700 people refuse to pay as a Vietnam war protest. San Jose State professor Barnett calls the aim to test the tax’s legality, not to disobey it. Attorney Lloyd McMurray says suits seek a ruling on the taxing power during an undeclared war.
The Greek liner Ellinis with 1,700 passengers ran aground on Shingle Bank in the English Channel near Calshot and was freed after two hours. A Coast Guard spokesman said passengers were never in danger as the vessel resumed its Australia service.
Washington lawmakers Rosenthal and Eckhart introduce a bill requiring dates on all packaged perishable and semi perishable foods. The aim is to empower consumers with policing power to reject foods that pass a stamped pull date yet remain wholesome if clearly identified and stored separately.
Funeral services were held for Cleveland patrolman William Nagy age 31 slain in a West Side restaurant shootout. Police said Nagy, off duty, confronted a robber identified as Sidney Means 21. A civilian gunfight led to Nagy’s death with no inquest planned and the police chief calling it an unavoidable tragedy.
Post offices opened with stamps on sale for first class top and airmail. Prices rose two cents for first class and one cent for airmail, according to the new rate schedule. The change reflects a broader price adjustment announced today.
The Postal Rate Commission opens hearings to decide if the $1.41 billion temporary rate hike should become permanent. The new rates went into effect as the commission delayed action, with a July 1 deadline for final ruling. The plan raises stamps, air mail, cards, and second class mail to help cover a projected deficit.
Eight Naval Academy midshipmen were expelled after a 10 day drug crackdown. Investigators retrieved suspected narcotics including marijuana LSD and amphetamines from Bancroft Hall as searches continued. Five expulsions were announced Friday and three more Sunday bringing the total to eight.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and U S Ambassador Jacob Beam met at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow for about 30 minutes to discuss mutual troop and arms reductions in Central Europe. Brezhnev had urged negotiations, while Rogers called Brezhnev's proposal vague and asked for clarity on scope and amid NATO concerns.
