The city fire commission outlines a 1952 53 budget with salaries 12 000 and capital outlay 71 000 including a 1000 GPM pumper engine about 22 000 a new fire house 30 000 and land 10 000 due to district expansion. Chief Olivera expects the pumper by May 22 and three new staff hired July 1 for engine operation and vacation relief from volunteers.
Funeral services are set for Benny M. Pegis Sr. who died today at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 9 am in Sorensen Bros Chapel followed by a requiem at All Saints church. Rosary will be recited Monday at 8 pm. Interment in Holy Sepulic cemetery. He lived at 2862 Rexroad and was a retired cannery worker. Survived by his wife Annie and several children, a brother in Portugal and a sister in Brazil.
Betty Osgood's services are planned in Hayward at Sorensen Brothers on 1140 B Street. The obituary notes her husband Bud Osgood and her sister of Frank A Cart of Sacramento. Osgood, a Prescott Ontario native, aged seventy nine, passed away after an illness.
Ashland reports a Fairmont school outing at Redwood Regional Park tomorrow at 10 am for students and parents. Ruth Peek publicity chair invites all, with River area games and prizes for groups, plus baseball in the afternoon until 6 pm. Coffee and punch provided. families to bring their own. Hayward students dominated the annual American Lesson Auxiliary Poppy poster contest. Stanley Gerlen won first prize, with several Hayward entrants receiving awards and honorable mentions. Countywide judging included Bligsbeth students, and the Bugy A Art Association provided judges.
John Poppin a San Francisco 18 year old won the 20th district Optimists club oratory contest held at the clubhouse, defeating rivals from the district. Second place went to a German contestant, while third honors went to Bikio Tomson of East Oakland.
Federal security administrator Osrar R. Ewing urged California Democrats to back the Pat Brown delegation to the Democratic National Convention in the secretary election next month. He said the party must field a real leader to retain national leadership and endorsed Pat Brown as the favored candidate for president and vice president. He argued the party stands for peace and opposed aggressive moves abroad.
