Salvage Work On Seaplane In Bay Starts
Investigation operations were in full swing today to pull the crippled giant Tradewinds flying boat from the bay mud. The 80 ton Coral Sea rested in six feet of water a half mile west of Russell City Road on the Hayward side. The bottom will be patched before tow to Naval Air Station Alameda. The craft carried 16 aboard when it crashed after an engine failure at 19,000 feet. Five crew were injured and the pilot Elbert Binkley described a failed feather and uncontrolled propeller leading to a rapid dive and crash landing.
