Jim Angel an 11 year old Hayward student will return to Hillcrest school's fifth grade on May 20 after a conference between his parents and officials. Officials say the readmittance comes with assurances the boy will obey school rules and authority.
Washington report says Teamsters Union President Dave Beck and an associate earned 11,585 dollars by selling their own mortgages to the widow of Beck's best friend. The Senate Labor Rackets committee said Beck was trustee of the widow's fund to which the mortgages were sold.
A pilot reported sighting the wing of a missing plane near Santa Paula Peak, linked to an Edwards Air Force Base flight. The plane carried four on board. mortgages worth 71,607 were bought at a discount by Beck and Hedlund with Teamsters funds, while Beck’s Memorial Fund held related mortgages.
In Jerusalem a foreign ministry spokesman said Israel will drop plans to test Egypt's Suez blockade on shipping during Dag Hammarskjöld's visit. The plan involved the Danish freighter Jens Toft passing the Suez Canal toward Haifa with a cargo of copra from Djibouti French Somaliland.
John D. Houdashelt eighteen at Swope Park Zoo in Kansas City patted a six year old brown bear on the head. The bear gripped his right hand with jaws and clamped his forearm. He pulled a cigarette from his mouth and pressed the hot tip to the bear’s nose to free himself. The incident ends with no serious injury reported.
President Gustavo Rojas Pinilla has resigned and handed over power to a five man military junta amid wild demonstrations in Bogota. Colombian circles in New York report private advice that police and soldiers fired on crowds in Bolivar Square, with casualties feared.
Sixteen Navy men escaped unharmed when a Convair Tradewind seaplane plunged from a steep dive into shallow Bay waters two miles north of San Mateo bridge. Cmdr Binkley at the controls managed a crash landing. Crews in liferafts and helicopters aided survivors, 12 rescued by Maj. Koe nic of Hayward base. Plane badly damaged but afloat with engines to be removed for repair.
SAN LORENZO Menvall Lopes about 50 of Castro Valley was crushed to death at 10 this morning when a cement truck pinned him against a house on Elgin Street. The truck tipped while Lopes reached for the ready mix chute. it drove over a hidden cesspool, deputies said. Driver Henry Walker said he had used the load earlier without incident. Lopes was moving the house to a new site to pour cement for foundations and was taken to Fairfield Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Edwards Air Force Base in California studied photographs of an unidentified flying object reported seen over the base. Two civilian technicians used special equipment to track and record the object. Unofficial sources said the object appeared circular and glinted brightly in the morning sun.
Hollywood reports Lindsay Crosby nineteen year old son of Bing Crosby involved in an alleged hit and run in West Los Angeles last night. Officers pursued a report of a car driven by Lindsay Crosby owned by his brother Dennis Crosby colliding with a parked vehicle.
Witnesses describe a giant Navy seaplane plunging from 9400 feet into a bay off Hayward Airport. The pilot made a last moment heavy landing in shallow water saving 15 crew. Rescue craft from Hayward Air National Guard and helicopters from Oakland and Alameda stations rushed to recover survivors as the craft sank.
Fires burn across Plymout, Lakeville, Montague, and Athol as winds fuel major forest blazes. A National Guard battalion moved from Worcester to Athol to help fight the flames, with three other units patrolling Plymouth area. The fire situation extends to Maine New Hampshire New York and six Canadian provinces with ongoing concern.
In Oakland a mother, 31, and her 9 month old son Boyd died in a flash fire that swept their small apartment. Neighbors Sterning Clark and Elizabeth Clark found Mrs Gardinery on the living room floor and could not pull her to safety. Police said she was a heavy smoker and the fire started in her bedroom. Neighbor Clinton Bird, awakened at 4 45 am, called police and reported a fire alarm after hearing a cry for help. Gardiner, her husband, had separated two weeks earlier but planned reconciliation and visited yesterday. Gardiner worked for an Oakland tire company.
Newark reports a large polio clinic with 1494 eligible preschoolers and adults. Yesterday 1483 of 1404 eligible people received shots as PTA volunteers and county health staff operated from 3:30 p.m. The vaccination line dwindled late in the day, prompting Leo Bohannon and Roy Jen son to donate their sound track to recruit more participants.
