Police agencies coordinate a weekend crackdown on strip traffic and nuisances. Officers will stop drivers, verify age and address, and pool information to connect cross jurisdiction flows. Sheriff Madigan notes emergency routes would detour around East 34th. officials seek ordinances to bar driving through parking lots and urge signs prohibiting trespassing with owner action against violators.
The proposed budget shows offsetting tax relief with new salary totals and expanded part time staff across departments. City attorney requests 3,085 in expenses and 46,940 in salaries, while clerk’s office seeks 7,835 for supplies and 44,335 in expenses and 34,010 for salaries. A Marine corporal fired on marines at Concord Naval Weapons Station early today then fled into hills near the ammunition dump. Cpl David Lopez, 22, a Vietnam veteran who recently reenlisted, broke into a bunker, seized ammunition for an M1 rifle, fired at a Marine major and a guard, both Vietnam vets, missed, dropped the carbine, climbed a six foot fence and fled into the hills.
Gordon Gonsalves of Hayward becomes president of Castro Valley Toastmasters Club, succeeding Ray Edwards of Livermore. New officers include Robert Groves educational VP Donald G Sherwood administrative VP Ken Welling secretary Warren Robinson treasurer and Gene Carson sergeant at arms.
Los Angeles AP County Assessor Philip F. Walson aged 42 and his codefendant attorney Robert Gold aged 82 were acquitted by a Superior Court jury on a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery. The judge instructed the jury after ruling the prosecution failed to prove an August 18 payoff scheme regarding tax assessment fees.
The Chinese Communist Party named eight leaders as renegades of Marxism Leninism and enemies of revolutionary parties. Named were Gonqika of Poland Novatny of Czechoslovakia Dl okov of Bulgaria Kadar of Hungary Trochet of France Jongo of Italy Gollan of Britain Ibarrari of Spain Brezhnev and Ulbricht were also included in the list. The attack tied to the European Communist conference in Czechoslovakia set for April 24 26.

Four Marines died when a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter crashed during a routine training mission near the San Diego Freeway four miles from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Orange County.
