A Niles resident died in a crash when a car struck a utility pole. Police reported the accident occurred early yesterday on a city street. Investigators are reviewing the scene and no other injuries were reported. The victim’s identity was being withheld pending family notification.
Senator Estes Kefauver told about 450 Democrats in Johnson City that he would win the Democratic nomination for president. J Howard McGrath argued Kefauver has best chance to defeat Eisenhower. Kefauver cited Minnesota upset as proof his organization is clicking. He said California primary looked favorable and noted his decision to run was based on confidence.
Adlai E. Stevenson defended his California campaign tour saying he set the record straight on Kefauver charges that he was "The Bosses' candidate." He called a Springfield Scrap Stevenson meeting unalterably opposed, saying he had not heard of it or who organized it.
Damp conditions gave way to clearing skies as Easter weather expectations varied. Southern Alameda ranchers faced water shortages and high feed costs amid abundant stock, while forecasters warned of scattered showers in the lower Midwest and possible snow for Easter parades farther north.
President Eisenhower left the White House briefly to play golf at Burning Tree with his son after celebrating David Eisenhower's eighth birthday. Aberdeen Washington authorities sought a motive for a quadruple murder suicide on a rural farm near the town. Four elderly residents were found shot dead including Fred Leach 76 and the Fry family and Ida Sawyer with a note and a $100 from a rural mail carrier pointing to a possible crime motive.

The Moscow through Tass reported a Soviet plan proposing an immediate halt to thermonuclear tests and a ban on nuclear weapons in East and West Germany and neighboring states. The plan, offered to the five nation disarmament subcommittee in London, seeks separate talks on nuclear and conventional arms and allows consideration of Eisenhower open skies aerial reconnaissance once confidence is reaffirmed.
Seven year old Robert Prochorenia was reported in fair condition after surgeons at Children's Memorial hospital stopped his heart for 22 minutes during a three hour operation to repair a hole in the muscular wall. A mechanical pump circulated blood while his heart was paused. The team of nine surgeons and assistants performed the procedure, claimed a first for the hospital.
Vatican reports Pope Pius XII will renew his peace appeal during his Easter blessing to the world. About a quarter of a million in Rome including Romans pilgrims and tourists are expected to gather in St. Peter's Square for the open air address. Holy Week rituals were revived to boost church attendance and the weather may affect an outdoor ceremony as bells toll for Easter preparations.
Two mail carriers reached long service milestones yesterday in San Leandro. William S. Peaberthy, 65, of Oakland, and Albert R. Zimmerman, listed at Lewelling Boulevard, Box 88, completed more than three decades delivering the mail on their routes.
One man died and three others were critically or seriously injured when a northbound car left Highway 11 near Warm Springs, tore through a six foot ditch and rolled end over end across fields after hitting a utility pole. Howard A. Mendoza, 27, was killed. his wife Join A. Mendoza, 23, and twin Roy A. Mendoza, 27, were injured. Mary G. Lockhart, 18, was treated for leg injuries.
