Submarine periscope sighting prompts coast search off California

The Navy reported a patrol plane sighted an unidentified submarine periscope about 2 pm forty miles off Cape Mendocino. Destroyer Colahan was dispatched to assist in the air-sea search as Humboldt Bay Coast Guard notes another sighting four miles south of Blunt Reef. Navy officials declined further detail.

Nicholas Verne, a 26 year old convicted arsonist, confessed to setting the blaze at a private sanitarium that killed nine mental patients. The fire trapped inmates bound to concrete beds, while a nurse and firefighters rescued others amid dense smoke. Husky Blond Nurse Held In Calf Rustling Case

A complaint charges Mrs. Firth Band a 23 year old Oakland nurse and three 17 year old youths with grand theft for allegedly paying each $25 to help rustle five calves and four cows. Band faces arraignment next Wednesday in justice court, while the three youths are in Alameda county juvenile hall. Detective Stanley Petersen said Band confessed to the thefts and described how she lifted cattle onto a truck. Band operates a rest home and said the operation was not very profitable, noting she also paid for a truck and the slaughterhouse paid $135 for the calves. She has roots in Florida and Wyoming and trained as a nurse in Boston.
