Civil rights leader Whitney M. Young Jr died at 49 from an apparent heart attack in Lagos Nigeria while swimming with former Attorney General Ramsey Clark. An Air Force plane from Andrews Air Force Base will fly him back to the United States, commanded by Brig. Gen. Daniel James Jr. James is the highest ranking Black officer in the Air Force and deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs. Young and Clark were in Nigeria for a meeting with African leaders organized by the African American Association.
