Frank Reed Nichols, a 47 year old architect in Memphis, designed an umbrella shaped rooftop home with no first floor to combat air and noise pollution and protect privacy. The core features a suspended living space over a carport, double thick windows, central stair or elevator, and a water recirculation system. Prototypes priced 30000 to 40000 dollars with potential savings through mass production, though no units built locally. Nichols hopes suburbs will embrace the design despite lukewarm contractor interest.
