Citizens Utilities seeks 42 percent rate increase
Citizens Utilities seeks a 42 percent rate hike to raise net profits to 129,900 annually. The request follows a 3 percent rise approved four months earlier and faces opposition from Niles Decoto water groups worried about water quality and higher bills. The Alameda County Water District charges about 10.36 for 300,000 cubic feet, far less than Citizens, which cites needed revenue for a fair return and system upgrades amid a state health report noting contaminants. The PUC will hold a public hearing as the company seeks to increase rates from 7.5 percent to 9.5 percent of its 14 million base.
