Frontiers burn as Israel and Syria trade shell fire
Israeli and Syrian artillery exchanged across the frontier during the night in a flare up that revived fears of a wider Middle East war. Tel Aviv said several shells from Syria hit the Kuncitra sector with no casualties, triggering an Israeli return barrage after a two hour pause in the week of exchanges. Egyptian, Damascus, and Cairo officials weighed whether this marks a major shift toward broader hostilities as Egyptian analyst Heikal urged a political solution. Israel warned it would retaliate if attacks resumed from Lebanon or Syria after four days of strikes in Lebanon and a sequence of air and artillery raids. Syria claimed Israeli air overflight near Latakia but said planes were driven off by its fighter and ground defenses.
