Ashland residents seek to join San Leandro in a 18 000 plus annexation. Coordinator Richard Hancocks says petitions have enough signatures and will be filed in early July with a November election targeted. City clerk and county registrar will verify signatures and timing, with a public hearing to exclude properties before the Ashland vote.

In Columbia Tennessee UPI reports a emotionally disturbed 16 year old, Andy Zinmer, accused of starting a fire in his jail cell at Maury County jail. The blaze killed 34 prisoners and visitors prompting arson and 42 counts of manslaughter. Cyanide fumes from padding were suspected. Visitors fled as smoke blinded corridors. Autopsies and chemical tests were ordered to identify the toxic agent.
The Supreme Court ruled that lawyers may publicly advertise their prices like other public service providers. It also said false or misleading ads can be curbed and that the government may regulate time, place, and manner of advertising.
Secretary Brock Adams announced tougher federal fuel economy goals, raising the 1980 target from 20 mpg to 22 mpg for 1981, 24 mpg for 1982, 26 mpg for 1983, and 27 mpg for 1984. He said the policy would save about 10 billion gallons of gasoline daily and save consumers around $1000 over a car's life, despite auto industry concerns.
