Heat sparks rush of area blazes threat to parks

A series of brush and grass fires swept South County as humidity dropped and temperatures rose. Eleven fires were reported including a 12 acre blaze near Antioch, with a 200 acre Sierra foothill fire near Shingle Springs. Livermore hit 101 and park closures or restrictions affected Don Castro and regional recreation areas. Fire chiefs met in Berkeley to coordinate response and reduction efforts amid tinder dry conditions across California.

Supreme Court Invalidates Federal Wage Rules For Local Workers

The Supreme Court overturned the 1974 amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act that would have required state and local governments to follow federal minimum wage and overtime rules. Justice Rehnquist wrote the 54 decision. California cities faced potential budget crises if the law had stood, with overtime pay for firemen possible above 54 hours. Local officials warned federal intervention could disrupt employer employee relations.

Garbage rate rise could reach four dollars in areas

The Joint Refuse Rate Committee of Alameda County recommends higher monthly garbage charges for Oakland Scavenger Co customers. Northern areas and Hayward Castro Valley Ore Lama would see 4 per can and 3.10 per yard in some zones, with other cities ranging from 2.60 to 3.90 per can and 1.20 to 3.75 per yard. Costs cover closing landfill sites on Davis Street and Winton Avenue, estimated at over 1.5 million. Rate proposals move to city councils for approval with July 1 start if adopted.
