UPI reports the May CPI rose 0.6 percent, elevating the annual inflation to 7.2 percent as food and gasoline led the rise. Despite wage gains, real spendable earnings rose 1.2 percent while rates on mortgages eased slightly.
Four leaders of a 30 day transit walkout in San Francisco were sentenced to five days in jail and 500 dollar fines each for contempt of court. Judge Horn ordered the sheriff to detain them and noted no work furlough. Five organizations were fined 4000 dollars each.
Alameda County Fair directors plan to seek further court action to enforce a restraining order on strike picketers at the fairgrounds. The move follows continued use of disputed signs and noncompliance cited by fair officials as the 21st day of strike unfolds.
Hayward district Basic Skills Committee urged improved school community communication and use of survey data to shape K 12 curriculum and long range planning. It found 33 percent survey response with 64 percent open to a basic skills school at their current or any district site. 15 percent would enroll despite transport.
Taxpayers have paid about 178000 over two years for a districtwide reading program that school officials admit was not spent on reading. A 1974 study showed one third of entering high school freshmen read at best at seventh grade level. A 33 member committee advances slowly as a key researcher resigns, delaying real implementation.

Party leaders pledge to keep Communists out of government though coalition options hinge on Socialists and outside support for policy influence.
Doctors at Letterman Army Medical Center report 11 cases of rapid weight loss causing profuse hair loss, known as telogen effluvium. The study notes hair often regrows months after resuming normal eating, though the mechanism and exact hair loss per pound remain uncertain.
