Smoking Death Rate Higher For Older Men, AMA Reports
A new AMA convention report shows male smokers aged 60 to 70 have up to a 73 percent higher death rate than non-smokers of the same age. The ACE study, led by Dr. E Cuyler Hammond and Dr. Daniel Horn, analyzed 187,766 men and found elevated deaths from coronary disease and cancer among those who smoked. The initial analysis covers 4,854 deaths since January 1952, with 749 in the one-pack-per-day group. The study continues for two and a half years.

At March Air Force Base California three B-47 Stratojet bombers launched at 7 am on a 6700 mile nonstop flight to Yokota Air Base near Tokyo. Led by Major General Walter C. Injuries Reported In Alameda County Weekend Crashes
Three persons were seriously injured in southern Alameda county auto accidents over the weekend. Montalvo Hermongenes of Pleasanton, 36, remained hospitalized with a possible skull fracture after his car hit an embankment on Altamont pass near the Western Pacific overpass. His passenger Roserio Ortiz, 25, Altamont, swerved to avoid a truck and lost control. Trofilo Jarmaenlg was hospitalized with deep lacerations and a shoulder injury after a collision on Vallecitos road near Vineyard road with Anthony Garcia Sandhez, 41, Irvington. An 11-year-old Livermore driver was uninjured but cited for improper clearance. A 16-year-old passenger had minor injuries. Betty Allen, 34, remained in critical condition at Alameda hospital after a turn from Niles road. Richard Duval, 22, a Navy boatswain’s mate from Morgan Hill, suffered a fractured nose when his car struck a tree on First street near Livermore boulevard. Joan Boyd, 18, San Jose, was treated for minor injuries. Bernard LeRoy Balsen, 49, Castro Valley, was treated for minor injuries after a collision on Sandy road. In a separate incident Marvin Vernon, 21, Hayward, was slightly injured when his car flipped on the freeway near the Hesperian avenue ramp in San Lorenzo and he was cited for careless driving.
